A little about me.... I was a professional dog groomer in my 20s, worked as a veterinary assistant, then worked in public service (government) for 15 years in Social Services, Finance & HR.
I was fortunate enough to qualify for an education program to have my Bachelor of Commerce degree fully funded as long as I worked full time and did school in my "off time." It was a hell of a lot of work but so worth it and allowed me to move up the ladder in the public service where I really thought I could "make a difference" and do important things!
I had what should have been a dream career but honestly I felt depressed and uninspired for the last 10 of those years, as I dealt with a toxic work environment, a failing and dangerous former marital relationship, and eventually chronic autoimmune illness.
My inspiration during tough times was having fun hobbies that have now turned into additional income streams:
In 2019, I completed a 130-hour Aromatherapy Certification just for fun, and I also run the website & social media for Boondocks Essential Wellness.
You'll also notice from our social media posts that we also enjoy a 'whole food plant based no oil' way of eating & we share lots of great recipes!
Wellness is not only about physical health. Yes, eating well is a pillar of support for our short and long term health. I also believe that significant components to living a fulfilled life are:
What excites you? What are your passions?
What were you really good at or day-dreaming about as a child, teen, or young adult that you put on the back-burner?

Mike's first passion was cooking, and he worked at the Riverview Lodge in Dryden in his teens and early 20s, then moved to the Okanagan to raise his family. He has been a chef, a taxi company owner, and has now been a truck driver for nearly 20 years, safely driving Greyhound buses on the BC highways, tour buses through the Rocky Mountains, driving septic trucks, hydro-vac trucks, as well as logging in BC mountains.
Mike has two amazing adult daughters from his previous marriage, now works for a great local logging company in Sioux Lookout, and takes great pride in his woodworking, home renovations/repairs, and custom projects (Boondocks Rustic Revival).
Mike was also the project manager for building our Caribbean vacation home Drifter's Claim Corn Island, which we will finally be finished building in the fall of 2020. (And then we have plans for more!)
Our ultimate dream is to be able to run a small vacation resort and have wellness retreats on our Big Corn Island property!
As we always say, DREAM BIG!
Even though we enjoy living life to the fullest, we are no strangers to health issues. Mike has sustained many sports and work-related injuries including over 30 broken bones, sciatica & a crushed disc in his back. He puts in long hours (with frequent night shifts) sitting in the driver's seat traveling bumpy logging roads. He has had 2 logging truck roll-over accidents. On weekends he builds rustic furniture and likes to fall trees and mill them for lumber for his projects. While we were in Nicaragua in 2016 & 2017, he led work crews to build our amazing Caribbean house and held his own when the crews were hand-mixing and hand-pouring concrete in the nearly 40 degree Celsius heat (102 F) to build each level of our home, bucketful by bucketful!
All of these things require a great deal of physical exertion.
I (Jo) struggled since 2007 with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (from a horseback riding injury) and then since 2010 with autoimmune disease (Lupus & Hypothyroidism) that resulted in taking a handful of pills on a daily basis for several years. Many of the prescriptions caused side effects which then led to additional prescriptions. My doctors told me numerous times that I would be on these prescriptions for life.
Despite also having surgery in early 2017 for invasive melanoma (skin cancer), I have now been prescription-free since December 2016 thanks to some drastic changes in my diet, mindset and lifestyle. It has not been a walk in the park - honestly it has been a lot of work - but in my opinion has been the best thing for me for my overall health and happiness.
We have both dealt with chronic pain for many years but have found natural ways to support our health and well-being in ways we never thought possible. Mike's way of talking about mindset is "hope." But he doesn't just sit back and hope or wish for things; he takes MASSIVE ACTION to reach his goals while fully knowing he will reach what he strives for. Mindset really influences how we see the world, how we talk, and how motivated we are to even create goals in the first place.
Through our continual learning in the world of vision boards, positive mindset work, natural health and wellness we can provide you with guidance on how to benefit from some of the helpful lifestyle choices we have made.
The key to being actively engaged in living a full life is taking care of the vessel! (Meaning, your body, mind & spirit.)
