Gut Health and the Microbiome

Recipe for a healthy gut

First things first. The opening to your gut is right at the top - your mouth! The products you use in there (Listerine, for example) can be detrimental to the good bacteria necessary for a healthy, balanced oral microbiome & gut microbiome. Toxin-free, plant-based mouth rinses & toothpaste are much safer alternatives. The Thieves line has both!

Next ... cut down on the junk. Twinkies, fast food, hot dogs (what's in them, really?) ... you know what we're talking about. Then eliminate any foods from your diet that you know cause you to be bloated or in discomfort. These foods are often processed wheat, dairy, gluten, and meat - for many people. If you eat breads, try something as simple as switching to WHOLE GRAIN or ANCIENT GRAIN (not whole wheat), and oil-free (the Sprouted brand at Safeway is awesome!).

GLUTEN-FREE bread is a great way to make healthier sandwiches if you love bread but have digestive or skin issues from it.  A growing number of people are finding when they go to a gluten-free diet, their skin clears up, their indigestion clears up, their belly bloat diminishes, they have more energy in the daytime, and sleep better at night. Many people also find lots of health benefits from eliminating dairy from their diet as well. All dairy. Milk, cream, butter, yogurt, sour cream, all the cheeses.... all of it. In this day and age there are so many great whole food, plant based alternatives, it's pretty easy to switch.

If you feel bloated from wheat and gluten, Young Living's Einkorn pasta and Einkorn flour are amazing! Made from the original wheat plant, with no pesticides, the Einkorn line (flour, pancake mix, rotini, spaghetti, etc) is extremely popular among those who are looking for better quality food that is healthy for your family.

Sugar is another big one. Processed, refined sugar is wreaking havoc on our bodies and once you try to cut down on your sugar intake by reading product labels in the grocery store, you will be alarmed at just how much of it you and your children have been consuming on a daily basis.

Are you sick alot? Colds and flus like sugar. If you feel symptoms coming on, eliminate sugar from your diet for at least a week and see how you feel!

When you really need sweetener for things, try raw honey, natural (real) maple syrup, or even birch syrup rather than processed granule sugar.

Raw, healthy foods with lots of fibre should be in every meal. Salads, veggie bowls, complex carbohydrates, fresh organic fruit, and as little as possible of boxed, packaged, processed anything. Also add in turmeric (a great anti-inflammatory herb), drink filtered, good quality water, eliminate pop, & sugary-caffeinated 'energy' drinks (these make your system crash a few hours later - and crash hard.) NingXia Red is a very healthy alternative natural energy drink!

Your digestive system is "home" to trillions of bacteria - called "microbes" - that make up the environment referred to in the gut as the microbiome.

One of the most common ways to upset the balance of your microbiome is to remove all of your bacteria by taking antibiotics for something, maybe a short term illness of some kind. We are a society that often turns to antibiotics as a first step, rather than a last resort, and our bodies are paying the price over time. Antibiotics kill everything - the bad and the good. If you have been on antibiotics and not replaced your population of "good bacteria", you may be noticing weird body symptoms like bloating, skin issues, that foggy brain feeling, or even body/joint pain. Anti-bacterial soaps & wipes can also kill the good bacteria on your skin. An unhealthy balance of not enough good bacteria while consuming inappropriate foods can cause inflammation which can lead to pain in other areas of the body. Or maybe you think you've got food allergies "all of a sudden."
