Essential Oils to Repel Bugs

Lavender

Young Living Lavender fields

Young Living's Lavender is "Lavandula Angustifolia." TRUE Lavender. It smells more plant-like than synthetics and diluted economy oils, and is effective at repelling TICKS, MOSQUITOES, FLIES, BLACK FLIES, FLEAS & MOTHS.

Lavender oil is also great on your skin to soothe a bug bite (or a sun burn!).

In a therapeutic sense, Lavandula Angustifolia is helpful for sleep, calming anxiety, calming sinus issues (it's in our "bloomin relief" blends!), coughs/colds, and pain management.

Lemongrass

We used some plant photos to show what the plants look like, but we highly recommend using concentrated, potent essential oils, not plant matter. The essential oil is so much more powerful, you need very little of it to see an impact.

Young Living's Lemongrass essential oil is from the east Indian plant "Cymbopogon flexuosus." It is steam distilled from leaves, and has an ORAC score of 17,765.

Lemongrass essential oil supports digestion, tones and helps regenerative connective tissues and ligaments, dilates blood vessels, strengthens vascular walls, promotes lymph flow, and is anti-inflammatory and sedative.

Lemongrass may also help improve circulation, combat headaches, respiratory problems, and sore throats. And as Jo can attest to, is one of two oils recommended in the Integrative Medical Guide for people with Lupus. Ask her about it!

We love it. MOSQUITOES, FLEAS & TICKS don't.

Peppermint

Mentha Piperita plant

Peppermint ("mentha piperita") essential oil is great for repelling SPIDERS, FLIES, BLACK FLIES, MOSQUITOES, COCKROACHES and in some cases people have used peppermint to repel MICE and other rodents too. It has a cooling effect on the skin and itching from bug bites is greatly reduced.

We have had success chasing away the Dryden "pine beetles" (spotted sawyer beetles) using a mixture of the 'original 6' bug spray recipe (see below) plus Thieves & extra peppermint. We will continue working on a pine beetle-specific recipe that may be available at future markets.

Peppermint oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stems and flower buds. Peppermint is one of the oldest and highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion and 1-2 drops of therapeutic grade peppermint oil are no match for an upset stomach or indigestion. It's also really helpful as a decongestant, antifungal, antibacterial, stimulates the gall bladder, is a pain reliever, an expectorant, and anti-inflammatory for the intestinal and urinary tract. Hot flashes, menstrual cramps, headaches, motion sickness, nausea...this oil is a must-have in your medicine cabinet!

Citronella

Cymboogon nardus plant, aka citronella.

MOSQUITOES and NO-SEE-UMS will have a much harder time locating you if you are wearing Citronella essential oil because it masks the carbon dioxide and lactic acid scents that the insects are searching for. This was an extremely helpful oil we used in Nicaragua - it worked like a charm!

Citronella oil is steam distilled from the leafy parts of the citronella plant, also known as "Cymbopogon nardus."

It is antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antispasmodic. It can be used for digestive and menstrual relief, and may help with headaches, respiratory issues, neuralgia, fatigue, and oily skin.

Eucalyptus Globulus

Eucalyptus globulus leaves.

There are more than 700 species of eucalyptus and most are native to Australia; a very small number are found in areas of New Guinea and Indonesia. One species, Eucalyptus Deglupta, ranges as far north as the Philippines. Of the 15 species found outside Australia, 9 are exclusively non-Australian. Young Living's Eucalyptus Globulus is from Australia, Brazil & China. It has an ORAC score of 24,157.

Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil is probably most well known for its wonderful benefits for respiratory applications including helping to ease congestion and pressure, colds, flu, fever and bronchitis. For centuries, the Australian Aborigines used the disinfecting leaves of E. Globulus to cover wounds. It has powerful insect repellent effects and Eucalyptus trees have been planted throughout parts of North Africa to successfully block the spread of malaria. (MOSQUITOES don't like it.) Neither do BLACK FLIES or TICKS.

It's also a great essential oil to use in massage or other topical blends to ease muscular pain and arthritis.

Thieves Blend

Thieves essential oil

Thieves®. Where to begin? First off, its a proprietary oil blend developed by Gary Young / Young Living. Other companies have tried their best to copy the ingredients, but none have come close. Some brands even use similar names! But still, nothing compares to the original. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery, as they say. Yes, it's THAT awesome, that every company wants their own copy.

This is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. It is fantastic for supporting immune wellness by using in the diffuser during cough & cold seasons! If someone in your family is ill with a virus or respiratory issue, Thieves in the diffuser at night may help ease their symptoms to 'get over it' faster. We haven't had a cold or flu in our own home for almost 2 years now. Thieves essential oil is another "must have," plus Young Living has developed an entire household product line with it! Yes, it really is THAT good.

WASPS, ANTS & MOSQUITOES don't like cinnamon. Pure cinnamon oil has been used effectively to kill mosquito larvae. The additional oils in this blend are all known for insect-repellent properties so it's useful even on its own!
